Shannen Miller, 15 years old

At 15 years old, Shannen is in Year 10, loves art, enjoys swimming and up-tempo jazz dancing. But there are two things that make Shannen Miller pretty extraordinary.

Firstly, she is determined to raise as much money as she can for Jeans for Genes, the major fundraiser of the Children’s Medical Research Institute. The other thing about Shannen is that she has chronic granulomatous disease, a condition that affects one in 4 million people.

‘Yes, it’s pretty rare. What it means is that part of my immune
system doesn’t function properly and I am affected by bacterial or fungal infections. I have regular antibiotic injections and have even had to have my liver drained – it was painful and some complications meant I had to miss the whole first term of school this year,’ she said.

This year Shannen again, hopes to raise lots of money. She knows
the Children’s Medical Research Institute is worth every dollar she raises to help children in the future be healthier.
