T & R Murray Bridge sizzled up thousands for Jeans for Genes Day

A dedicated Genie, Tammie Halls, writes of her Jeans for Genes Day experience...

Last year T and R Pastoral became a Jeans for Genes day Genie and sold merchandise and raised a small amount, this year I approached Darren Thomas the CEO of T & R Pastoral and asked if we could put on a sausage sizzle for our plant which consists of 1200 people on Friday 6th August, He said yes and donated the sausages that we would need to have the BBQ our Plant Operations manager David McKay also agreed and donated soft drink. You could buy a can of drink and a sausage for $2.

I approached our local Bakery and asked if they could please donate the bread that we would need to have the BBQ, Mc’Cues Bakery was more than obliging coming to the party with 60 loaves of bread, I then asked my Local IGA in Murray Bridge if they would like to donate some sauce for the day, they happily donated Mustard and BBQ sauce. I then approached our Dry store Manager as we needed to find 1000 serviettes, as he deals with all our packaging suppliers he was able to ask Master Butcher’s league if they wished to donate, they were more than happy and gave us 3000 serviettes and a box of 2ltre bottles of tomato sauce. Onions was the last thing on my list, each few weeks we have a gentlemen come onto our plant he bought in a 10kg bag of onions from Mypo traders.

The day was a roaring success and after being on my feet for 14hours I had managed to survive 900 sausages, 45 loaves of bread and 35kg of onions (we had to go and get more onions to cover the demand) later it was time to sit down and count our donations for the day, this was a long but very rewarding job. We had raised in the sale of merchandise, sausages and donations a total of $1869.45.

I emailed this figure to the whole MBR plant, then and this is the really awesome part the CEO Darren Thomas returned my email and said that he will match that figure $ for $. So in total we raised $3738.90. This was a fun and rewarding day and for our first sausage sizzle what I would say was very successful, nearly every single staff member helped out during one part of the day or another, with out the donations from local business or my helpers this day would not have been half as successful.
