Allens Arthur Robinson (AAR) is a strong supporter of charitable and community organisations. In 2006, AAR put a musical spin on their fundraising to increase awareness of the campaign, to provide a firm-wide social opportunity, and to improve their fundraising results.
In 2008, the legal team decked out in their finest denim, 'Jean Genies' worked tirelessly selling badges and merchandise. The Sydney office organised a 'Battle of the Bands whilst the Melbourne office rallyed together to put on a karaoke Jamm.

Their Plan
Each of the firm's six departments formed a band and each band prepared two songs. At staff drinks on the night of Jeans for Genes Day, each band played a song before being ruthlessly and hilariously "judged" by an Australian Idol-style panel of partners. The judging panel and star MC Michael Rose (recently elected Managing Partner) kept the audience laughing, as did the musical entertainment to songs such as 'Billy Jean', "Jean Genie" and many more.
The audience was asked to vote for their favourite band by donating $2 per vote. Each band had a motivated collector who was responsible for cajoling the audience into making donations into a Jamm Jar. At the end of round one, the coins were counted and the top bands played again. The process continued until the winner – the band with the most votes - was announced to audience acclaim.
Their fabulous results
An awesome event. The audience let all six bands play to the bitter end and voting continued through the night as each department tried to achieve musical supremacy. In total raising over $23,000 from the event.
Here are some hints & tips from AAR
-
Drum up support from across your organisation (pun intended) – before a big announcement went out, the organising committee had recruited a primary contact from each department to put together and "manage" the bands. People from Marketing volunteered to put together eye-catching and cheeky posters, kitchen staff designed blue-themed food and drinks and denim tablecloths, and the winning band from Corporate Services sang a denim themed song. Crucial to AAR's success was the fact that everyone, from the new Managing Partner elect to the Chairman of the Charity Committee through to paralegals, maintenance, kitchen and support staff, pitched in to lend a hand and raise money for a fantastic cause
